The Nouveau Riche

Devon Banks

The Egg's are the much envied home to New York's richest, and it's doors are opening to new milionaires. East Egg houses many of the wealthiest people in New York. It's classy residents gain their wealth through inheritance, and their social status is more than exclusive.      However, a new type of rich is arising, dubbed the 'new rich' or 'nouveau riche'  It is clear that inheritance is no longer the only source of wealth, so where are these high roller's getting their money. Nick Carraway, a bond broker from Wall Street is certain the economy is the reason. "The economy is showing promise as the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) hit the 100 mark yesterday," says Carraway "That's a 25% increase since the start of the year when it was at the 80 mark."

Though the aspiring economy is often credited for the rise of the "new" rich, the recent death of tycoon Jay Gatsby has unveiled facts that suggest an alternate explanation. It was discovered that Gatsby was involved in organized crime, and made his fortune of off bootlegging. The 18th amendment made selling grain alcohol in drug stores very profitable, landing him in a massive West Egg mansion in just 3 years.  Nick Carraway just so happened to be Mr. Gatsby, and told reporters "Jay was a man of hard work. He may have done wrong in the past, but he was worth the whole damn bunch (The old rich) put together."

The 'new rich' can not be classified as good or evil, only successful. In a world where people can work hard and succeed as much as any other, it would appear as though the American dream has become a reality.
